The potato is back, and this time it has traded the usual alien arena for a prehistoric jungle. Brotato: Primal Dread, a new downloadable expansion for the fast-paced survival game, launched on November 2. The project is credited to Blobfish Games and Evil Empire, with Blobfish publishing it. The expansion keeps the compact arena-action format but gives players a new setting full of dangerous creatures and fresh equipment.
Blobfish Games describes itself on Steam as an indie studio based in Zurich, Switzerland. That makes this release a notable update from a small European developer whose best-known game turns a heavily armed potato into an unlikely action hero. Evil Empire is also credited as a developer on the expansion. The new content requires the base game, so it is an add-on rather than a standalone sequel.
The expansion’s headline setting is a hostile jungle with prehistoric and mutated enemies. Its store listing promises a new map featuring 20 waves of enemies, elite opponents and bosses, alongside new characters, weapons, items, music and achievements. The mix gives returning players more choices to experiment with while preserving the quick runs and build-focused action that define Brotato.
A new mechanic called Evolution adds a twist to those builds. In the developers’ announcement, players can steer the stat toward either a Mecha or Mutation path. The two directions change bonuses and the enemies encountered: the Mecha route brings weapon upgrades and laser-firing mechanical dinosaurs, while Mutation offers copied item effects and more chaotic mutant foes. In other words, the jungle can become a test of tactics as well as reflexes.
Primal Dread is available on PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, with the official listings showing a price of $3.99 in the United States; prices can vary by region. The launch is also accompanied by a major update to the base game. For Blobfish, the release extends a small studio’s potato-powered universe with a larger challenge, while giving fans a reason to return for another round of increasingly strange survival runs.
