A fresh start for your PC: make the most of Christmas Eve break

After 6 November, Estonia’s next public holiday and day off in 2026 is Christmas Eve, Thursday, 24 December. The official state calendar lists it among public holidays, separate from other national days of importance. If you have a little free time before the celebrations, use it for a few gentle computer checks—not an all-day repair session. A tidy, updated PC and a verified backup can make the weeks ahead smoother, while leaving most of the break for family, friends, and rest away from a screen.

Start with low-risk maintenance. Save your work, restart the PC, and check Windows Update early enough for a reboot. Then open Settings > System > Storage and review Storage Sense or Cleanup recommendations. Remove only temporary files you recognize, and inspect Downloads before deleting anything. Low disk space can contribute to slow performance and make updates harder, but it is only one possible cause. Before a larger cleanup, copy important files to a separate drive or trusted cloud backup, then open a few copied files to confirm the backup works.

Next, reduce background clutter. In Task Manager, review Startup apps and disable only programs you recognize and do not need at sign-in. Uninstall apps you no longer use, and run a Windows Security scan if you suspect unwanted software. Skip unknown “PC optimizer” tools and do not turn off security updates in search of speed. For a work computer, ask its IT administrator before changing company-managed settings. These modest steps are safer than jumping straight to a full reset.

A Windows reset or reinstallation is more serious than routine tidying. Depending on the option, it may remove apps, settings, and personal files. Before proceeding, confirm a separate backup, find the BitLocker recovery key if the device is encrypted, and check which Windows edition and license belong on the computer. If slowness continues, look for the underlying software or hardware cause first; formatting cannot repair failing hardware or guarantee better performance.

If Windows or other programs keep malfunctioning, KOTIK offers remote formatting and Windows reinstallation support. Data backup is always included in KOTIK’s remote formatting service. Support is available in English and, with translation assistance, in other European languages. **Nós falamos sua língua!** Before a reset, you’ll know what could be removed, and work proceeds only with your approval. Get help with a troubled PC without risking your files or spending the holiday troubleshooting alone.
